Shopping & Market Towns
Boutiques, markets, outlets and brilliant little finds
Shopping in North Essex offers something for every kind of browser, bargain-hunter and weekend wanderer. Whether you’re in the mood for independent boutiques and market town charm, a relaxed stroll with coffee and a few thoughtful finds, or a more focused shopping trip with big-name brands, there’s plenty to explore across the area. Saffron Walden is a natural starting point, with its attractive streets, independent shops and lively market town feel. Great Dunmow brings a more laid-back mix of strolling, cafés and easy browsing, while Braintree Village is the place to head for a full-on shopping day with outlet favourites all in one place. Together, they offer three very different ways to enjoy shopping in North Essex.
Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden is one of North Essex’s most rewarding shopping towns, combining historic character with a strong independent spirit. Its attractive streets and market town atmosphere make it a pleasure to explore on foot, with boutiques, gift shops, fashion, jewellery, books, antiques and food shops all adding to the mix. A good place to start is Swan Meadow car park, where there is plenty of parking and just a short five-minute walk into the centre of town. From there, you can emerge opposite the historic Cross Keys Inn — once a meeting place of Oliver Cromwell — and begin your visit right in the heart of Saffron Walden. If you visit on a Saturday, you can also enjoy the long-established market, which adds even more colour and character to the town centre. More than just a place for a quick browse, it’s a town where shopping feels part of the experience, with plenty of reasons to wander, pause for coffee and discover something unexpected.

Great Dunmow
Great Dunmow offers a more relaxed shopping experience, with a friendly market town feel that suits a slower wander. Parking at the Co-op car park puts you right in the centre of things, making it easy to explore the town’s mix of independent shops, cafés, pubs and local businesses on foot. It’s a place where browsing comes naturally, whether you’re looking for a thoughtful gift, somewhere to stop for coffee, or a good spot for lunch. Great Dunmow also has a long-standing market town identity, and Tuesday is traditionally market day, adding to the sense of local character. With a strong selection of eateries, pubs and cafés, it’s an easy place to turn a shopping trip into a leisurely few hours, and The Old Saracen’s Head offers the added appeal of food and accommodation right in the heart of town.

Braintree Village
Braintree Village is North Essex’s go-to destination for a more dedicated shopping day, bringing together big-name brands, outlet savings and plenty of places to eat and drink in one easy-to-navigate setting. With lots of free parking, a dedicated railway station and a direct link to London, it is an easy choice for both local visitors and day-trippers looking for a full retail experience. This is not somewhere for a quick half-hour browse — to make the most of it, you’ll want to allow a good half-day to explore the shops, enjoy a break for food or coffee, and take in everything on offer. Alongside fashion and lifestyle brands, Braintree Village also hosts seasonal events, holiday activities and pop-up experiences at different times of year, giving each visit something a little different.

More to Discover
North Essex shopping is about more than one big trip or one perfect high street. Beyond Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow and Braintree Village, there are plenty of other places worth exploring for independent shops, market town charm, antiques, gifts, homeware, food finds and unexpected little treasures. This guide is just the beginning, and more towns, shopping spots and local favourites will be added as Discover North Essex continues to grow.
